Julien Deiss (b. 1983) is a German-French artist who lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark. He holds a Master of Fine Arts, having studied at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, École supérieure d’arts de Brest and The University of Lund, with teachers such as Siegfried Anzinger, Markus Lüpertz and Reinhold Braun. He has exhibited at galleries across Europe and in Australia and has participated in numerous solo shows in Denmark as well as in Germany at galleries like Von Fraunberg Gallery, bb-Contemporary, FFFZ Kulturforum and Galerie Schloss Neersen. He has taken part in international art fairs in Copenhagen, Herning, Aalborg and Dornbirn, and his works feature in the art foundation Stiftung Kleine Kunstdialog West/Ost’s collection. In 2019 he co-authored the book Undervejs med mennesker. Skitser til en æstetisk inspireret samtalepraksis (People in process. Sketches for an aesthetically inspired conversational practice) together with psychotherapist Tina Lauritzen. Most recently, his works have been exhibited at the parliament in Düsseldorf at the exhibition „resonance; conversations with a statue“. Julien Deiss' œuvre is abstraction and figuration at the same time. He is best known for his delicately coloured works with incorporated figurative motifs, for example Thorvaldsen's sculptures and other classical statues and elements. The fine, often antique sculptures that he incorporates into his works are almost always missing something, for example a body part, or are joined with something that does not fit. There is a small dysfunction in the whole that undermines the pure aesthetic and makes the work vibrate with a duality, a balance between beauty and destruction, edification and aggression.
